The historic residence was built in 1854 for prominent Rochester attorney and newspaper editor Horatio Gates, who sought to emulate a castle he admired during a visit to Scotland. Nestled in Highland Park, its restoration represents a successful partnership between the Landmark Society, which rehabilitated the building’s interior, and Monroe County, which provided essential exterior repairs.  

The tour includes a guided walk through the Sunken Garden, one of Rochester’s landscape architectural treasures, added to the grounds behind the castle in the 1930s. 

Free parking is available in front of the Castle (please don’t park on the side of the building, which is reserved for private parking). If necessary, additional parking can be found on Reservoir Avenue.
