Sason

By Susan Krasner, Sason Choir Director

“Sason”, our youth choir, has spent this past school year learning and singing extraordinary Jewish music together. Recently we had the pleasure and profound experience of leading the Partisan’s Hymn, “Zog Nit Keynmol” (“Never say that you are walking on your last road”)at Yom HaShoah, (Holocaust Memorial Day). Zog Nit Keynmol is a 4 verse poem and powerful song originally written by Hirsch Glick, in Yiddish. This is the second year that we have been invited to lead this Hymn, and the experience of learning this piece, its history, message, and spirited melody, and singing for the community has been a most meaningful experience for all. We also participated the following week in the Yom Ha-Zikaron (Israel Memorial Day) and Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) community event. We performed the moving piece “Ashrei Hagafrur” (“blessed is the match”) written by Channah Senesh, and then had the exciting opportunity to sing with well known Israeli singer, Danny Robas, “Yerushalayim Shel Zahav” (“Jerusalem of Gold”). We also sang at several family services this year, and performed at the Channukah Dinner event. Students learned both a variety of traditional and modern Jewish pieces, including the history and composers, and have grown tremendously in their ability to sing harmonies and make beautiful music. Most importantly, they have grown into a community of musicians who are supportive and caring for each other, while connecting to the extraordinary messages and inspiration of this Jewish music. Sason has shown how music is an incredible way to bring people together in community. This year we had a community of 35 dedicated singers, ranging in age from 9-16 years old. Congratulations and thank you to Sason for your hard work, dedication, love of music and willingness to share this with others. Students interested in joining Sason for the next school year will find a registration form in the school mailing over the summer. Please fill it out and join us!
