Temple Sinai is actively involved in several Rochester-based programs and events, such as local clothes-drives, RAIHN, interfaith initiatives etc.
Recent program:
Friday, November 4th - a special Shabbat on issues affecting children in the greater Rochester area, including a "call to action" around the upcoming 2012 County budget to help the most vulnerable. The "Children's Sabbath" is an annual event sponsored nationally by the Children's Defense Fund. It has appeared locally before, including at Temple Sinai, and The Children's Agenda is now organizing and staffing it to make it an annual event and part of ongoing advocacy by the faith community on issues affecting children. (The Children's Agenda is a local organization advocating at the federal, state and local levels for evidence-based solutions that improve children's health, education and success, particularly the most vulnerable.) National event sponsors include the Union for Reform Judaism as well as United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism. Locally, event sponsors include the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, the GRCC/Faith in Action Network, the Interfaith Alliance, the Interfaith Forum, and others. Materials on the moral imperative in the Jewish tradition to advocate for change for children can be found at: http://www.childrensdefense.org/child-research-data-publications/data/2011-sabbath-manual/sabbath-2011-jewish.pdf We will discuss the issues and collect post-cards for Temple Sinai members to County officials about key programs for kids. Attached is a story about one such program that we're likely to advocate for, along with a photo of the beneficiaries:
